Common Ground World Project

Project Description

The Common Ground World Project is a collaborative work which includes both people and earth from all 188 countries of the United Nations.

The artist and the newly formed World Mandala, at the UN May 5, 2000

This extraordinary work of art illustrates the spiritual and genetic thread that connects all people, tying us together with hope and inspiration.   UN Under-Secretary General, Nitin Desai.    It is an environmental work sponsored by the Division of Sustainable Development at the UN.

A tremendous effort was required to recruit, motivate and coordinate people around the world, to extract earth from their country and actually send it to New York.

During the spring of 2000 these unique earth materials were used to begin construction of a sculpture on location at the United Nations in New York City.

100 year-old Mary Livornese and newborn Kelly Rose placed their handprints in the center of the World Mandala.

The process physically involved living breathing people from every country of the world.

The Common Ground World Project is officially endorsed at the United Nations by the department of Economic and Social Affairs. The Ford Foundation made a generous grant to support the final fabrication of the sculpture. The project was made possible by the sponsorship of the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the generous financial support of many individuals. With the participation of literally thousands of individuals in 188 countries, this global project has been successfully realized. Thank you for your support.
